Being Liminal…

The word liminal comes from the Latin word, limen, meaning threshold. Like being in a doorway, it’s the transition point between leaving and entering, ending and beginning.

“In the universe, there are things that are known, and things that are unknown, and in between them, there are doors.” ― William Blake

We have many doors that we meet in life, thresholds to cross over. Endings that become beginnings. Some we can walk through easily. Others are these intimate magical moments that change our lives through the alchemy of awe and wonder. However, there are other doorways that we resist or refuse to enter at all. Whether we eventually enter by choice or not, we can find ourselves in hallways that have no exits. Call them challenging times, difficult life issues, periods of overwhelm, the dark night of the soul, etc. They all have a common theme, we find ourselves in discontent, in a quagmire about what is happening. And this can come up in one or many aspects of our lives; our soul purpose, career, relationships, finances, connection with nature, belonging, menopause, aging etc.

What is being called for is a deeper understanding of the liminal, the polarities and mystical.  Not just with the mind and intellect, but in the body and belly too. Transitions are part of life. We all have our own seasons, change as ongoing deaths and rebirths.  If destruction is called for it is making space for a new creation. And that can be an extremely vulnerable, raw and painful thing to go through, even if we do understand what is transpiring. We need to truthfully look into our darkness, the fears we have around change and impermanence. To honestly see what is holding us back.

There is a deeper invitation here and is the core of my work. That is to be more fluid within these relationships of the opposites. This isn’t just mayhem going on, even though it can sure feel that way at times. There is an incredible beauty the polarities generate. A tension as a place of sacred creativity, power and a fuller expression of life.

Star Tetra-hedron

Sacred geometry is part of life. We see it in the Fibonacci spiral, our DNA, etc. It is the organic mathematics of this world that we live in. I am drawn to the star tetrahedron also known as Merkaba. This is the symbol of the liminal. It is made from two interlocking tetrahedrons (3D triangles). Each one spins in the opposite direction compared to the other. One tetrahedron facing downward and the other pointing upwards. Two contrasting forces in union, balanced within a liminal dance.

This is where two polar forces meet as a sacred joining. A merging of the feminine and masculine, earth and cosmos, matter and spirit, immanent and transcendent, inward and outward, solid and ethereal.

Something new is created by the tension of pulling together and pulling apart. A generated field where a simultaneous contraction and expansion brings in the liminal.

I know this can sound very esoteric, even beyond personal experience. Yet, the Merkaba shows us what is possible. In our own lives, the cultural tendencies are to follow the lure of only one of these polarities. To go down the rabbit hole of what the current definitions are to these dualities. It can be more comfortable to live in the black or the white. It is more defined, unwavering and knowable. Yet this conditioning is geared towards choosing one over the other. Making one right and the other wrong. It is why we see such great divides all around us and in us! Yet it is natural to move between the two polarities, just like a child on a swing going back and forth. It truly is beautiful to both deepen and expand, experiencing both sides of the opposites. When we can move more freely between the two, this opens the doorway and builds the capacity to travel that space in between. To linger within the liminal.
